Patient transportation is an essential enabler in achieving treatment compliance. The CCF patient navigation team ensures daily that each patient on treatment appointment is transported to and from the Hostel to several treatment centres in Kampala. Treatment centres within Kampala include Uganda Cancer Institute (Mulago), Kawempe Referral Hospital, Kiruddu, Hospice Africa Uganda and Kampala Hospital etc.
Patient transportation also helps reduce the length of patient stay at The Haven Hostel, freeing up beds for other patients to be admitted. Prior to offering this service, patients with financial constraints would either have to walk to the treatment centre or have to wait until CCF was able to offer transport to the facilities. Missing treatment appointments were also common due to late arrival at the treatment centres.
Finally, patients who are done with their treatment or those on a break are also supported through transport subsidies to travel back to their families in rural areas and to return for follow-up appointments when due.
Currently, CCF has a patient Vehicle with a capacity of 10 patients per trip. On average daily CCF;
- Provides two round trips between The Haven and respective patient treatment destinations centres.
- Transports at least 12 patients and caregivers (to and from) treatment centres to the Haven Hostel.
- Spends 2 dollars (7,000 Uganda Shillings) to cover transport costs per patient.
