In 2008, CCF started the first cancer patient hostel in Uganda- The Haven, which provides free accommodation to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment but permanently resides more than 20km from Kampala.
Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for accommodation allows patients to focus on getting better. The hostel provides a nurturing, home-like environment for patients. We aim to increase patient’s compliance with treatment regimens and protocols through practical and social support. The Haven is still the only hostel in Uganda that supports male adult cancer patients as well as adult female patients.
The hostel is strategically located to minimize costs of transport to Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) - the national referral cancer treatment centre. On average daily;
- The Haven accommodates 30 patients and caretakers.
- CCF spends 3 US dollars (11,100 Uganda Shillings) to cover the accommodation costs per patient.
